Our method
Each projection starts from production per game. This season counts more as the player plays more games. Before that, we start from last season, smoothed by the season before. For a newcomer, we start from his seasons in another league (AHL, NCAA, KHL, SHL, OHL, WHL) brought to the NHL level, his age and his draft rank. A skater with more power play time than last season sees his rate rise a little.
Expected games follow his club’s schedule and the share of games he plays. An injured player is expected out until the expected return date of the injury report, otherwise for as many games as he has missed. A number one goalie rarely plays both nights of a back to back.
Streaks do not change our projections. On the 2025-2026 season, following the recent form made predictions less accurate. The Hot and Slowing down lists still show them: they help pick a free agent or time a trade.
Checked on the whole 2025-2026 season, replayed at several dates. Before the first game, the average gap with the points actually scored afterwards was 9.8 points per skater, against 10.8 by extending last season’s pace, and 8.6 against 12.7 for rookies. On December 31, it was 4.9 points per skater. The worst and best case held the season of 80 to 83% of skaters depending on the date. The injury report has no history: return dates were checked with the real return dates, as a perfect report would give, and are left out of these numbers.
Points projected for the rest of the season, then the full season. Skaters: goals and assists. Goalies: 2 points per win, 1 per overtime loss and 2 per shutout.
