Five games on Sunday, and a night for the history books. Connor McDavid broke a Wayne Gretzky record, Pyotr Kochetkov is still perfect, and Cutter Gauthier led a wild comeback in Anaheim. Here's what matters for your pool.
Oilers 4, Rangers 1: McDavid passes Gretzky
Connor McDavid scored just 50 seconds in, then added an assist. Per NHL PR, he's now the fastest player in NHL history to 30 assists in a season, in 15 games, beating Gretzky's mark of 16 games in 1984-85. His NHL record season opening assist streak is up to 15 games. It was also the 8th opening minute goal of his career, the most in Oilers history, one more than Mark Messier. Evan Bouchard had a power play goal and two assists, Leon Draisaitl had two assists, and Colton Dach scored twice, once into an empty net. Matt Tomkins, in his first start of the season, stopped 27 of 28. Pavel Dorofeyev scored the only Rangers goal.
Pool take: McDavid has 39 points in 15 games. That's just silly. Bouchard (26 points) is one of the best fantasy defencemen in the league. Tomkins was good, but we'd wait to see who gets the net before making room for him.
Hurricanes 7, Jets 0: Kochetkov is 10 for 10
Pyotr Kochetkov stopped all 26 shots for his second shutout. He's now 10-0 with a 1.49 GAA and a .929 save percentage. Sean Walker scored twice, once shorthanded. Logan Stankoven (goal, two assists) hit 10 goals, and Sebastian Aho added a power play goal and an assist. Nikolaj Ehlers, Seth Jarvis and Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists each. For Winnipeg, Stuart Skinner gave up five goals on 17 shots before Colten Stevenson took over. Per NHL PR, it's four straight wins for Carolina.
Pool take: Kochetkov goes in your lineup every time he plays. Stankoven has 10 goals in 16 games, a reliable scorer. Skinner (.887) is one to avoid for now.
Ducks 6, Senators 3: Gauthier and the big comeback
Ottawa led 3-0 after the first on goals from Philip Tomasino, Claude Giroux and Michael Amadio. Then the Ducks scored six straight, four of them on the power play. Cutter Gauthier had a hat trick, including two goals 36 seconds apart in the third, the fifth fastest two goals by a Duck in franchise history per NHL PR. Judd Caulfield had two goals and an assist, Leo Carlsson had three assists and Roger McQueen also scored. Laurent Brossoit made 19 saves on 22 shots for the win. Jake Sanderson had two assists for Ottawa, and Jonas Johansson stopped 27 of 33.
Pool take: Gauthier has 7 goals and 8 power play points in 13 games. Carlsson has 21 points, 14 of them on the power play, in 14 games. Caulfield (8 points in 12 games) is a name to watch in deeper pools. Sanderson has 10 points in 8 games.
Flyers 6, Mammoth 3: Konecny is back
The Flyers activated Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett off injured reserve before the game, and Konecny went right to work with his first goal of the season and an assist. Matvei Michkov scored his 10th, and Christian Dvorak and Noah Cates had a goal and an assist each. Jamie Drysdale had three assists and Travis Sanheim two. Oliver Bonk and Cole Knuble, into an empty net, also scored. Dan Vladar stopped 19 of 22. For Utah, Logan Cooley and Mikhail Sergachev scored on the power play, Nick Schmaltz and Clayton Keller had two assists each, and Karel Vejmelka gave up five goals on 20 shots.
Pool take: if Konecny or Tippett were sitting in your IR slot, put them back in your lineup. Michkov has 10 goals in 16 games, with 6 power play points. Cooley (17 points) keeps cashing in on the power play.
Wild 5, Capitals 1: Quinn Hughes and Wallstedt
Quinn Hughes opened the scoring, his 5th, while logging 29:41. Michael McCarron, Maxim Shabanov and Danila Yurov, the last two on the power play, also scored, and Kirill Kaprizov added his 15th into an empty net. Joel Eriksson Ek and Bobby Brink had two assists each. Jesper Wallstedt stopped 26 of 27. Justin Sourdif scored for Washington, and Logan Thompson made 24 saves on 28 shots.
Pool take: Kaprizov (15 goals, 25 points) and Hughes (21 points) are must starts. Wallstedt is 9-2-3 with a .920, a true number one. Shabanov has 10 points, 7 on the power play, in 15 games, a nice option in deeper pools.
The bottom line
Hot right now: Connor McDavid, Pyotr Kochetkov, Cutter Gauthier, Leo Carlsson, Logan Stankoven and Matvei Michkov. Worth a look on the waiver wire in deeper pools: Judd Caulfield and Maxim Shabanov. And don't forget to activate Travis Konecny and Owen Tippett.
