NHL Oct. 29 recap: Caufield and Newhook shine, Cooley and Arvidsson record hat tricks

The Habs win 5-2 in Dallas, Viktor Arvidsson and Logan Cooley score hat tricks, Matthew Schaefer wins it in OT and Kochetkov stays perfect. Thursday's recap and what it means for your pool.

What a night! Eleven games on Thursday, two hat tricks, two overtime finishes and a Canadiens team heading home all smiles. Here's what matters for your pool.

Canadiens 5, Stars 2: Caufield and Newhook light it up in Dallas

Alex Newhook's audition on the top line went about as well as it could. Bumped up with Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky, he scored twice, including a beauty in the first period. Caufield also scored twice, his 7th and 8th of the season. Phillip Danault added an empty netter and an assist, and Noah Dobson had two helpers with Mike Matheson out. Jakub Dobes made 17 saves on 19 shots for the win. As RDS and TVA Sports pointed out, the Habs wrap up their road trip with a perfect record.

Pool take: Newhook now has 3 goals and 6 points in 13 games. As long as he's riding with Caufield, he's a fun add in deep leagues. Caufield (12 points) is a must start. Dobes got the win, but his 4.05 GAA and .853 save percentage keep us cautious. Dobson is soaking up Matheson's minutes, keep him active.

Red Wings 4, Blackhawks 1: Viktor Arvidsson takes over

First game since Dylan Larkin's suspension, and Viktor Arvidsson stepped up with a hat trick and an assist, the last goal into an empty net. Alex DeBrincat had two assists and Lucas Raymond scored on the power play. John Gibson stopped 18 of 19. Connor Bedard got Chicago's lone goal.

Pool take: Arvidsson has 8 goals and 14 points in 13 games. With Larkin out, there are minutes up for grabs in Detroit and he's grabbing them. If he's on your waiver wire, now's the time. Raymond and DeBrincat stay locked in.

Mammoth 4, Penguins 3 (OT): Logan Cooley with 0.6 seconds left

What a finish. Ben Kindel gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead with 25 seconds to go, but Logan Cooley tied it with 0.6 seconds on the clock to complete his hat trick, as David Pagnotta noted. Mikhail Sergachev then won it in overtime. Sebastian Cossa made 31 saves. For Pittsburgh, Kindel had a goal and an assist in his return, Evgeni Malkin had two assists and Rickard Rakell scored shorthanded.

Pool take: Cooley has 7 goals and 15 points in 14 games, he's on fire. Sergachev (16 points) is a top D in every format. Kindel is producing right away, keep an eye on him in rookie and deep leagues.

Islanders 4, Wild 3 (OT): Matthew Schaefer does it again

Matthew Schaefer played over 30 minutes and scored the winner just 33 seconds into overtime, his second goal of the night, plus an assist. Bo Horvat scored on the power play and Ilya Sorokin made 22 saves. For Minnesota, Quinn Hughes had a goal and an assist in 33:41 of ice time, and Matt Boldy forced overtime.

Pool take: Schaefer already has 14 points in 13 games, hold him in every format. Hughes has 20 points in 15 games, nothing more to say. The Wild are still at the heart of the Larkin rumors, follow along in our rumors section.

Lightning 6, Jets 4: four point night for Pontus Holmberg

Pontus Holmberg had a goal and three assists, while Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli had three points each, Cirelli scoring on the power play. Andrei Vasilevskiy got the win despite allowing four goals on 21 shots. The Jets made it scary with three goals in the third. Neal Pionk scored twice and Mark Scheifele had three assists. Stuart Skinner was replaced by Nico Daws after 40 minutes and five goals on 21 shots.

Pool take: Holmberg has 10 points in 12 games. In deep leagues he's worth a look while he's hot. Hagel (16 points) just keeps producing. If you were counting on Skinner, that one hurt.

Hurricanes 3, Blue Jackets 2: Kochetkov is still perfect

Pyotr Kochetkov made 24 saves on 26 shots and is now 9-0-0 this season. Logan Stankoven scored his 9th, Mark Jankowski his 7th and Jordan Martinook opened the scoring. Seth Jarvis had two assists. Kent Johnson scored on the power play for Columbus.

Pool take: Kochetkov (1.66 GAA, .919) is the most reliable goalie around right now, start him every chance you get. Stankoven has 12 points and a +11 in 15 games. Jankowski has 7 goals, a nice surprise for deep leagues.

Blues 4, Bruins 1: Joel Hofer slams the door

Joel Hofer stopped 31 of 32 Boston shots. Philip Broberg had a goal and two assists, and so did Robert Thomas. Jimmy Snuggerud and Jake Neighbours both scored on the power play. James Hagens scored Boston's only goal, his 5th of the season.

Pool take: Hofer has a .923 save percentage this season, he's a starter. Broberg (9 points) keeps growing on the blue line and the St. Louis power play did damage. Hagens keeps chipping in, one to watch in rookie leagues.

Capitals 4, Predators 3: Cole Hutson and Alex Tuch

Young defenseman Cole Hutson scored twice and Alex Tuch potted the winner in the third, his 10th of the season. Aliaksei Protas and Jack St. Ivany had two assists each and Charlie Lindgren made 24 saves. Roman Josi had three assists and Filip Forsberg two goals for Nashville.

Pool take: Tuch has 10 goals in 12 games, he's rolling. Cole Hutson has 7 points in 12 games, a defenseman to watch in rookie and deep leagues. Josi and Forsberg stay productive in the loss.
