Ryan Nugent-Hopkins left Saturday night's game in Edmonton and did not return. That matters if you have him in your hockey pool.
What happened
According to NHL.com, Nugent-Hopkins sustained an apparent head injury 45 seconds into the second period of Edmonton's 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Place. The puck came off an attempted shoot-in by
Oilers defenseman Ryan Shea and hit him on the side of the head. He left the ice right away and did not come back.
The official box score gives him 6:38 of ice time, no points, nine shifts and a 40 percent success rate on faceoffs.
What Mike Babcock said
The Oilers coach sounded encouraged after the game. NHL.com quotes him as saying he does not think Nugent-Hopkins will miss much time. The first worry was a broken jaw, and the medical staff assessed that. Babcock expected more assessments on Sunday. He shook Nugent-Hopkins' hand in the hallway and said he seemed to be doing okay.
Janson Duench of The Athletic reported the same message: Babcock does not expect him to miss any time, with the same notes about the jaw, the follow-up assessments and that hallway greeting.
What it means for poolers
Nugent-Hopkins has 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) in 9 games this season, per the official NHL API. He already missed the first 9 games with a lower-body injury and made his season debut on Oct. 22 against Carolina. Another absence would sting in a points pool, a salary cap league or a keeper format.
The encouraging part is Babcock's tone. It is still wise to stay patient. A puck to the head, an early jaw concern and more tests to come are not a medical all-clear. If your format allows changes, keep an eye on his status before Edmonton hosts the Rangers on Monday.
For his career he has 815 points (295 goals, 520 assists) in 1,040 games. This is his 16th season with the Oilers.
