Kevin Bahl will not be back this season, and that is a tough one if you were counting on him on defence. The Flames made the diagnosis official Sunday morning.
What the club announced
On X, the Flames said their defenceman will be placed on injured reserve and will need season-ending surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon.
The story on CalgaryFlames.com says the same thing. It notes that Bahl, 26, has played 16 games this season, with a goal and two points, and that he led the club in ice time at 21:56 per game. The official NHL API matches those numbers: 16 games, 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 points, and 21:56 a night.
The team site adds that he is 6-foot-6, 230 pounds, and has played 313 NHL games, 165 of them with the Flames. His career line, again per the NHL API, is 12 goals and 53 assists for 65 points.
When he got hurt
Pat Steinberg of QR Calgary reported that Bahl sustained the injury before warmup against Anaheim on Friday night. The official box score from November 6 backs that up: Bahl is not among the Flames defencemen in that 5-3 loss to the Ducks. His last game was November 4 in Seattle, when he played 20:51.
Ryan Pike also reported, per the club, that Bahl is done for the year with an Achilles injury.
Pachal recalled from the Wranglers
A little earlier Sunday morning, the Flames recalled defenceman Brayden Pachal from the Calgary Wranglers. The club says he has 3 assists in 11 AHL games this season. The NHL API shows the same line: 11 games, 0 goals, 3 assists. He has not played in the NHL this season. For his career he has 28 points (6 goals, 22 assists) in 177 games.
The Flames host the Flyers on Sunday night in Calgary.
What it means for poolers
Bahl was not putting up big numbers, with only 2 points in 16 games. The sting is the workload: 21:56 a night, the most on the team. In a points pool, the damage is limited. In a category league, a salary cap pool or a keeper format, losing a defenceman who plays that much matters more.
His season is over. If your format allows changes, you will need to look toward other defencemen. Pachal is back as a depth option. He is more of a name for deeper pools than a target everywhere.
If you have other Flames defencemen, stay patient. Some of those minutes will be redistributed, and it is too soon to say who gets them.
