Only three games on Friday, but Thursday night left a mark in Los Angeles. Here's what changed since last night and what it means for your pool.
Brandt Clarke hurt, Hodgson in hot water
The Kings confirmed Brandt Clarke didn't return Thursday with an upper body injury. In the second period, Hayden Hodgson drove him hard into the boards and got a five minute major and a game misconduct for boarding. After the 6-5 overtime win, Peter Laviolette called it as dirty as it can be, per Eric Stephens of The Athletic. He had no update on Clarke, who looked OK leaving the rink and is being evaluated. Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen writes that the NHL's Department of Player Safety will review the hit and Hodgson could be suspended.
Pool take: Clarke matters, with 9 points in 12 games, 3 of them on the power play. Don't drop him, but have a backup plan ready for Saturday when the Kings host Buffalo. Drew Doughty, who had three assists Thursday, could soak up more minutes if Clarke misses time. Hodgson has no pool value unless your league counts penalty minutes.
Friday morning update: Bruce Garrioch expects Hodgson to have a hearing with the Department of Player Safety today, and a suspension looks likely. That's one more missing body for an Ottawa team already short up front.
Burakovsky hurt, Ottawa needs bodies
Garrioch also reports Andre Burakovsky took a hard hit from Mikey Anderson in the first period and didn't return with a lower body injury. With Hodgson tossed and Nick Cousins thrown out in the third, Ottawa finished with just nine forwards and still came back from 5-1 down to grab a point. Warren Foegele is already out indefinitely. Garrioch says the Senators will have to recall two, maybe three, forwards from Belleville on Friday with a weekend back to back coming, starting Saturday in San Jose.
In goal, Jonas Johansson was pulled in the second after allowing four goals on 16 shots. Samuel Ersson stopped 20 of 22 in relief.
Pool take: Burakovsky has no points in 8 games, so few poolers will miss him. Keep an eye on whoever comes up from Belleville if you play in a very deep league. As for the goalies, neither one inspires much confidence right now, and the weekend schedule should give each of them a start, though nothing is announced yet.
Garrioch adds that Steve Staios is working the phones for another scorer, and was shopping even before Foegele got hurt. If a forward lands in Ottawa, wait to see his role before you rush to grab him.
Overnight moves
The Blues sent Otto Stenberg down to Springfield in the AHL. No impact in most pools. Same story for Matthew Seminoff, loaned to the Texas Stars by Dallas on Friday morning.
In Pittsburgh, Frank Seravalli said on Oilers Now that Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust will be up for grabs, along with the rest of the
Penguins core outside the big stars. It's still just a rumor. Rakell has 6 points in 13 games and Rust has 5 in 7. A trade could change their role, for better or worse.
Tonight's projected goalies
Just three games on Friday. Here are the goalies projected by Daily Faceoff. 11 AM update: Paul Maurice has confirmed Akira Schmid in Florida. The other five aren't confirmed yet, so double check before puck drop (6 PM in Vegas, 7 PM in Florida, 8 PM in Calgary, Eastern time).
- Devils at Vegas: Connor Hellebuyck (a win and a .944 in his only start this season) against Adin Hill (5-1-0, .895).
- Jets at Florida: Nico Daws (2-2-0, .884) against Akira Schmid, confirmed (4-2-1, .884).
- Kraken at Calgary: Joey Daccord (3-3-0, .882) against Dustin Wolf (1-4-0, .839).
Pool take: Hellebuyck is the safest start of the night. Daws and Schmid are fine plays in deep leagues. Wolf is off to a rough start, so if you have another option, tonight might be the night to use it.
